Really enjoyed the videos, but I ending up feeling a little uncomfortable. It's like those movies/stories where you know something that the main character doesn't, and you desperately want to tell them? Like in Romeo and Juliet, when Romeo is committing suicide because he this Juliet is dead, and then Juliet wakes up?
Well, Python is not going to kill you, but I had a touch of that I-wish-he-knew feeling watching "Recovery from Addiction".
- Don't get me wrong, Python is a great language. I used it, evangelized it, and it made me much happier than I had been with C, or C++, or {insert annoying list of languages here}. I can't poo-poo the extensive libraries that Python has built up around it
- of course, some people would argue the same about Java or Perl.
Then I started using Ruby.
When I first looked at Ruby, I had a response similar to yours. I saw the syntax borrowed from Perl, and man do I dislike looking at Perl. It took another look, a real hard look, before I gave Ruby a proper chance. Then I discovered that most of the "ugly" that Ruby got from Perl isn't used by the Ruby community. It is just used as an easy landing spot for those trying to get away from Perl.
When I used Python, there were a few things that always felt icky. Those are the things that, when I tried to explain them to someone who was new to Python, I would puke in my mouth a little bit:
1) len(something), but something.items(). It seems silly, but it's just one of those inconsistencies that makes me think about the language instead of the problem, and slows me down. I just knew that it should be something.len().
2) I have to pass "self" into my instance methods. Seriously? That feels a little tacked on.
- 3) Whitespace matters?!? For a while I tried to accept this. I even defended it
- it enforces good style, I said. But every time tabs got mixed-in with spaces because someone had their editor configured wrong, ugh, I cringed. And if whitespace mattered so much, why did I have to keep putting colons all over the place.
4) Finally, public fields. Yes we are mostly consenting adults, but encapsulation can be useful, especially when exposing a class to a wider audience. So, as long as encapsulation can be had without a lot of syntax overhead, Why not?
So here is the example, in Ruby:
class Coord attr_accessor :lat, :lon def initialize(lat=0.0, lon=0.0) @lat, @lon = lat, lon end end
coord = Coord.new() coord.lat = -93.9
And here it is with the code to trap the bad latitude:

attr_accessor :lat, :lon

@lat, @lon = lat, lon

def lat=(lat)
raise ArgumentError, Bad latitude if lat < -90.0 or lat > 90.0
@lat = lat
end
end

So, the nice thing here is that I didn't have to write the stock getter/setter methods. In fact, the meta-programming in Ruby is so easy and powerful, I could create my own attr_accessor-like method that would generate getters/setters with range checking, or type checking, or logging, or whatever. Creating genereic getter/setters is painless, and since it is explicit, I'm not exposing all of my "fields" by default, which make a lot of the purists happy.
Also, there is no property "magic." The setter for lat is a method called "lat=". I don't have to call anything like: lat=property(getter, setter). It's not a special case, it's just a method.
And the attr_accessor doesn't perform any magic, it's just defining: def lat return @lat end def lat=(lat) @lat = lat end
- So, when I define my lat= method later, I'm just overriding the default one that attr_accessor created. And I love that I didn't have to reference "self" everywhere. Consistency abounds

So, why did I just waste an hour of my day off ranting about some seemingly trivial difference between programming languages. Well, I guess it's because I'm a huge nerd, and because I want Romeo to know that Juliet is ok. It's going to be a happier ending that way.

I know it's figurative but the political ammo justifying prohibition is built upon the plethora of generalities spawned by casual conversation. 7.7 billion to fight U.S. marijuana isn't enough of a dent in the taxpayer's pocketbook to alter that gravy train. Expect status quo for a bit longer. The Sun powers both.
