OK, the end of the world according to some certain militant types has come and gone, like most ends of worlds. It's nice that the end of the world does not discriminate with regard to belief, race, sex, creed, species, sub-species, variant, orientation, and so forth.
Yet some end-of-world predictions have, bizarrely enough, come to pass at this colossal period in cosmic history, this year of our mutliversal timespan, 789X2ΣخᏠ and 7 (and a half) or by however you prefer to measure time.
One such pronouncement came from the inventor of the Python programming language, the so-called "benevolent dictator for life," one Guido van Rossum who's got quite the "sweet-spot" when it comes to directing a software project.
Now, look, I give all due "props" to the Master van Rossum. He's made my job a hell of a lot easier as of late, much more than I can properly repay him. If he's into a classic cocktail I'll mix him up a mean one.
But he's not a developer of web applications. He's a designer of languages, first and foremost. I certainly envy him his position. Yeah, I agree that web applications are all "the shiz" but dammit! I'd love to sling some Objective-C code using the Carbon library and get paid for it. Listen, I hate AJAX and JavaScript and HTML and all of the abuses borne of them. Yet I fully acknowledge that for today's application deployment environment that's what we're stuck with, but FFS there are far better ways of creating usable programs that people don't just want to use, but yearn to use. I mean, that's the Web 2.0 dream, right? Uh oh, did I just incite a copyright controversy?
So my buddy Guido says to use Django. OK. Fine. I can certainly respect if not doff my cap at what the Jyangoe or however-the-hell-you-pronounce-it developers have come up, yet by my metrics, and those in my (corrected) classic screencast, Django comes up short.
For me, the deal-breaker is mixing an incompatible template language with XHTML. See, with some frameworks out there you can view, edit, refine, and perfect your forms without even having to run your framework. But Django adds a bunch of crazy syntax that shows up as text in your browser. Not good.
Guido chose wrongly. But hey, that's like asking Pierre Cardin to choose a calendaring groupware, or Edward Tufte what tunnel boring machine is useful in granite or Linus Torvalds to select the best Linux desktop. Don't trust any of them for choices for a web application framework.
