Slashdot has been a part of my online reading for years. As soon as Safari got an RSS reader, it joined my aggregation of feeds. And although it was sometimes more gossip than news for nerds, and occasionally it was stuff that hardly mattered, it was still good fun.
And then one day, Slashdot linked to a CNN Money article on 10 people who don't matter, which happened to include Slashdot's founder, Rob "CmdrTaco" Malda. Why? Digg allegedly made Slashdot obsolete. How? Through the power of community.
See, both sites accept news item submissions and then post them for others to see, to visit the referenced material, to comment upon what they saw, or to comment upon other comments. Slashdot goes through an editorial review, whereby a team of a few anointed individuals get to decide what passes muster and is ultimately published. Digg uses all of Digg's members, the hundreds of thousands of readers to either "digg" the story and increase its profile, or "bury" it and send it to the realm of mediocrity.
As the article points out, there's no way Slashdot's team of editors can battle such an army of article reviewers: "Malda knows his subject, and he's a good editor, but in the end, he's just no match for the power of the multitudes."
I tend to be a firm believer in the power of multitudes. Look for instance at the CD Database conceived by Ti Kan and Steve Scherf (and more-or-less misappropriated by Gracenote): the more people who submit CD music data, the more people who benefit from it. Slashdot's own comment moderation system relies on its members marking certain comments as insightful, informational, funny, off-topic, flamebait, and so on.
So, on 22nd of June 2006, I dropped Slashdot from my RSS feeds and replaced it with Digg.
What a disappointment!
Immediately I was buffeted with an array of articles rife with misspellings that were poorly summarized, failed to give context, and just weren't all that interesting outside of a "oh, wow" kind of response. Yet I decided to give it a fair shot: 2 months worth of Digg.
Ugh.
What's wrong with Digg's material?
The article summaries are awfully short, averaging about 35 words. Compare Slashdot's summaries at 130 words. Longer summaries are vital in establishing context for the linked-to material, with which many readers will not be familiar. They're also important in enabling the audience to assess the worthiness of following the link. Consider this Digg summary:
"Great tips for securing your assets in Wi-Fi hotspots... Really helpful!"
As many such articles have passed before, you can't determine if there's anything new here, or if even the submitter's opinion of "helpful" is informed. At least summarizing two or three of the tips would've been helpful. Sadly, this is typical of Digg:
- "An A-Z Index of the Linux BASH command line, very helpful."
- "Video of Jiffy Lube scamming a news team."
- "NY Times discriminates against Linux users. Here's the proof."
- "I have never seen advertising this clever... of course i live in the middle of nowhere"
- "The list contains the best and most popular Linux apps"
Summaries are atrociously misspelled and exhibit dreadful grammar. Consider this summary (currently at 1508 diggs):
"very-very important things that u might forgot when you buying your new digital camera"
"Very," as far as adverbs go, is weak, but this submitter had to use it twice, failing to capitalize the first one. As further proof of poor writing, "u" is used in place of "you" and "forgot" is in past tense. The only "you" that's spelled out should've been "you're." We're lucky "ur" isn't used in place of "your."
Online literacy is, of course, quite low these days, yet Slashdot battles that by having its editors not just approve articles but edit them to improve spelling and grammar. Admittedly, Slashdot's editors could also use some refresher courses in those areas, yet they're doing far better than the general Digg populace.
Comments on Digg articles are usually content-free.
On Slashdot, an interesting or controversial article is sure to generate huge amounts of commentary, much of it fascinating debate as groups of like and unlike minds engage in wordy repartee. A dull or redundant article is sure to generate huge amounts of commentary, much of it humorous and scathing. In either case, there's plenty of good reading.
Comments on Digg often amount to nothing more than "OMG! LOL!" and "teh sux0rz". Actual examples:
- "I think they fixed it."
- "Why the fuck are you using IE?"
- "I love it!"
- "Are you really older than 15?"
- "extremly handy for someone looking to get into sql"
- "Totally awesome man! its very usefull, I've always wanted something like this! 10x :)"
Sturgeon's Revelation firmly applies to what's available online: 90% of it is crap. Clearly, it takes an informed and skilled team of editors to filter out the crap and present the rest in a coherent fashion. That's what Slashdot does. Digg's multitudes can't hope to accomplish that. After all, 90% of them are crap, too.

Why Choose?
You comments about DIGG are accurate I feel, and I came to the same conclusion. But you clearly wanted to find a replacement for slashdot, which is I feel not the right approach. Slashdot has it's advantages, and so does DIGG. The advantage of digg is simply simplicity and power of the crowds, if something geeky and interesting emerges, the power of the masses will bring it to you instantly with DIGG. Slashdot is way slower, but has magazine style forum style approach. I say to you why choose? I didn't choose! I visit slashdot as much as I visit digg. open your mind, try looking at many things, and let each thing sink in it's advantages. I feel you'll have a better life if you do. I'll give you a quick example. I didn't choose a console. I just got all of them, a xbox, a psx2 and a game cube. Then I got a nintendo DS and sony PSP. I'll be getting a PSX3, xbox 360, and a nintendo WII. If you don't choose, you experience the wonder of all these things, and have plain more fun. I can't tell you how much fun it is. In the same context, you can use PHP, Perl, Ruby, Java, Python or whatever. You don't have to choose, somethings things good at certain things and some aren't nothing is purely perfect in itself. You just need to know what tool is best for the job, not force yourself to decide to pick the best one and then use that one. For example when I see cobol I think, why the hell aren't web laguages like that? They all just seem to be subsets of C++, with different syntax to me. It's only in smalltalk I see some serious innovation. But you probably didn't even have small talk or lisp and things like that on your evaluation list. Which brings back my original point. Have an open mind and use everything! It's more fun. Don't hinge one thing as the gospel. That is a very fatal mistake. For one thing, it's not fun!
