I've explored many web application frameworks, as most of you already know. And while my preferred framework may not be the same as yours, I think it says a lot when the framework being touted also happens to run its website.
Take, for example, the company behind the Spring Framework. Do they use Spring for their website? No, they use Plone. If that weren't an endorsement against using some complicated Java crap towards making a web presence then I don't know what is.
The Plone website is also run by the Plone content management system, which is indeed a good endorsement. However, lately the Plone website has been as responsive as a eunuch towards a harem girl's most sensual belly dance: lethargic, cold, and uninterested.
Insider information has led me to find out that it's not necessarily Plone's fault, though:
abusing the commenting system, a concerted effort of comment-spammers have wreaked havoc, bringing even
the respected plone.org under fire.
Is Plone really a contender? Hell yes it is. I run three separate Plone-based sites on
a high-volume shared system and they're as peppy as a jack-rabbit on habañeros
(forgive the metaphor—I've been living in Texas too long). Luckily plone.org
is actively reconciling these responsiveness issues. I'm sure that once
solved, people will
visit the site and come away with their socks completely blown off.

Should be healthy again now
There were a lot of different issues with the site:
- Spammers were triggering excessive amounts of 404s
- Three people had started aggressive wget scripts on the site (they now get a nice firewall message ;)
- A feedcrawler from China were hitting all our RSS feeds every few seconds (also blocked)
- The load balancer had stopped utilizing the different ZEO clients, and was only serving from one client
It should be back to its snappy old self now.

I had (maybe) russian spammers on my plonesite. Suddenly there were up to 500 new "members" and some of those "members" (i.e. jobgfdgvf) had spamcontent in their folders. Just at the first day i had a "true" new member! There are some hints at www.plone.org and i habe written about my experience in german.

Cause for the plone.org slowness
We are currently dealing with some unintended side effects of the spammer attack earlier this week - we have weeded out all the spam, but in doing so we have discovered that our 404 page is not cached, and is causing plone.org to slow down through the sheer amount of hits through the spam links that try redirecting through plone.org.
Plone is fine as a site for plone.org, but our 404 handling needs some improvement, it seems. ;)
