Loose screws in an Apple computer?

My three year old iBook G4 12″ died just a couple days ago. It's been across the country with me many times, and although the screen was too small and the processor was too slow and the memory wasn't enough and the graphics card couldn't do all of the fancy effects that people come to identify with Mac OS X, it was still quite a pleasant travel Unix box.
Best of all, it means I can finally upgrade to an Intel Core Duo 2 MacBook Pro. WOOT!
After diagnosing that it was the hard drive that died, I thought I'd go ahead
and fix it. After all, it's not too early for my six year old to have a notebook
computer, right?
The good folks at iFixit published a very handy guide on taking apart and replacing the hard drive for a do-it-yourselfer. I diligently followed their instructions up to page 9 when I discovered the unthinkable: two loose screws!
They weren't exactly loose, as the non-conductive material underneath the metal shield was holding them in place. Indeed, I can even see some slight indentations in the material where one of the screws was (the one on top of a chip). However, the other screw was making electrical contact with components underneath it. And it must've been doing so for three years!
Is this what killed my hard drive? Probably not, but still, as far a quality control goes for a company like Apple, it's quite surprising.

My Apples always lose their (outside) screws
Both my iBook G3 and now my PowerBook G4 once in a while lost one of the screws on the outside case. In that case I just paid a visit to my local Apple dealer and he'd provide me with a few extra screws :).
Btw, I ordered my Core 2 Duo MBP over a week ago, can't wait for it to arrive. Oh, and my excuse is that my dad really wants my PowerBook. Well, gotta please the folks... :)

Apple Computer representatives contacted me after seeing this posting on NASA Watch. My computer will soon be fixed at no charge to me. My interactions with Apple staff since my unfortunate experiences at their Tyson's Corner store - as well as the emails from other loyal Apple customers - have convinced me that the folks at that store were an isolated anomaly - and that Apple customer service is indeed still the epitome of the old saying " the customer is always right". Ignore all of my earlier comments below. I love my Mac computers - all of them. 70-643 Lots of people at NASA love them too. My business partner Marc recently converted to Mac for his day to day chores. As great as these computers are, Apple's customer service leaves a lot to be desired. Marc recently purchased a dual processor G5 and has had a string of headaches involving hardware and software - all exacerbated (not resolved) by Apple personnel. But I will let Marc tell that story. My story concerns my new 17" Powerbook laptop which I bought exactly one month ago. Yesterday,642-145 my wife and I were staying in a hotel in Pennsylvania. As I went to close my computer I noticed that the cover would not close all the way. I opened it to see if there was something obstructing it. Not noticing anything I opened it further. This time a new sort of obstruction became evident and caused the top to open in an odd way. The hinge felt rather weird. Rotating the computer I could see that a small screw had come loose from the lower left hand side of the display. 642-873 It had wedged one way - causing the lid not to close - and then another as I opened and tried to close the cover. In the process, the screw had acted like a wedge and had dented the corresponding rear corner of the computer. It also caused a slight buckling in a thin strip of metal around the side of the computer. My wife and I eventually managed to get the screw out with some tweezers and close the computer.

If it were me, I'd buy the MacBook instead - even if money were no issue, I like the format better.
Also, in case you don't know, buy ram from ramseeker.com. I picked up 2Gb for $200 or so.
It's also cheaper to buy the hard drive separately. The 160Gb Seagate Momentus SATA is about to hit the UK (probably already out in the US) and costs $200 again - much cheaper than getting the upgrade from Apple.
Oh, and get the white one.
